THE LAST HUSTLE
A Novel
Prologue: The Sound of Breaking
Atlanta, Georgia – Three Years Ago
The rain fell like guilty confessions. Kira Jones stood over the body of her first love, a smoking Taurus in her shaking hand, and understood that power was just pain with good lighting.
“You didn't have to do that,” whispered Milan, pressing a towel into the wound that wasn't hers to tend.
“Yes, I did.” Kira kicked the dead man's phone across the warehouse floor. “He was going to tell the feds about the Mexican link.”
That night, Kira stopped being a girl from Bankhead with a pretty face. She became a ghost with a Prada bag full of vengeance.
And Marcus Chen watched it all from the shadows, smiling like a wolf who'd just found its pack.

PART ONE: THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT
Chapter One: Sugar
Present Day
Sugar was the kind of place where the champagne was real but the smiles were rented.
Kira “Kitten” Jones stood on the mezzanine, watching her kingdom through smoked glass. Below, two hundred of Atlanta's finest criminals, athletes, and politicians mingled with women so fine they could start wars. The DJ spun a bootleg mix of Summer Walker and Spanish guitar. Bottles sparkled like liquid diamonds.
“You've been standing there for twenty minutes,” said a voice like honey over gravel.
Milan. Five-foot-nine of midnight-blue dress and don't-fuck-with-me energy. Her locs were pulled into a tight ponytail that could double as a weapon. She handed Kira a mojito.
“Marcus is late,” Kira said.
“Marcus is always late. That's why you're the brain and he's the bankroll.”
Kira took a sip, let the mint burn. “He's not just late. He's missing. His location pinged in Miami two hours ago. We don't have business in Miami.”
Milan's eyes narrowed. “You think he's meeting with the Dominicans?”
“I think he's meeting with someone. And I don't like secrets.”
Before Milan could answer, the front door swung open and Marcus Chen strode in like he owned the earth—which, to be fair, he owned about six blocks of it. He was half-Chinese, half-Black, with a boxer's build and a poet's smile. His suit cost twelve thousand dollars. His watch cost a used Honda.
He kissed Kira on the cheek—her left, never her right—and whispered, “We need to talk. Upstairs. Now.”
The private room was all white leather and black glass. Marcus poured himself a bourbon, didn't offer her any.
“Dubai,” he said. “Next month. The Emiratis want to move product through the ports. Three hundred kilos a month. We go from street kings to international.”
Kira crossed her legs. “Who's the connect?”
“A man named Rashid Al-Farsi. He runs half the Persian Gulf.”
“And what's his angle?”
Marcus smiled. “He wants to meet you. Heard about the queen of Atlanta. Wants to see if you're as pretty as the rumors say.”
Kira didn't blush. “What's the real play, Marcus?”
He set down his glass. “The real play is we stop being his soldiers and start being his partners. But first, we have to prove we can handle a deal this big. Which means you're coming with me. And we're bringing your sister.”
The air changed. Kira's spine went rigid.
“Lena? No.”
“She's got the passport. She's got the face. And Rashid likes twins, even fake ones.”
“Lena is not my twin. She's my half-sister, and she's a liability. She sleeps with drug dealers and steals from her own mother.”
Marcus stood, walked behind her, and placed his hands on her shoulders. “That's why she's perfect. If anything goes wrong, she's the decoy. We're in, we're out, she never knows the full picture.”
Kira wanted to say no. But she looked in his eyes and saw something she hadn't seen in years: fear. Marcus was scared of this Rashid. And scared men made reckless decisions.
“Fine,” she said. “But I pick the security.”
“You always do.”
She picked Milan.

Chapter Two: The Other Sister
Lena lived in a penthouse she didn't pay for, wearing clothes she didn't earn, draped across a sofa she'd probably stolen from some rapper's baby mama. The apartment smelled like weed, tropical candles, and regret.
When Kira walked in unannounced, Lena didn't flinch. She just smiled—that slow, knowing smile that had been breaking hearts since she was fifteen.
“Big sister,” Lena purred. “To what do I owe the intrusion?”
“Dubai. One month. You're coming.”
Lena sat up, suddenly interested. “Why?”
“Because Marcus needs a pretty face for a distraction. And because I need someone I don't trust close enough to watch.”
Lena laughed—a sound like breaking glass. “You've never trusted me, Kira. Not since I fucked your high school boyfriend.”
“You did me a favor. He had a small dick.”
“And yet you're still mad.”
Kira walked to the window, looked out at the Atlanta skyline. “I'm not mad. I'm careful. There's a difference.”
Lena stood, came up behind her. They were the same height, same mother, different fathers. Where Kira was all sharp angles and controlled fire, Lena was curves and chaos.
“What's in it for me?” Lena asked.
“Fifty thousand. Plus expenses.”
“Make it a hundred and I'll even wear the dress you pick out.”
“Seventy-five.”
“Deal.” Lena held out her hand. Kira shook it, feeling like she was making a deal with a cobra.
As she turned to leave, Lena said, “Oh, and Kira? Tell Marcus I said thanks for the advance. He already wired me twenty.”
Kira froze. “When?”
“Last week. Said it was for 'travel prep.' I assumed you knew.”
Kira didn't turn around. She couldn't let Lena see the fracture spreading across her face.
Marcus had given her sister money. Behind her back. That wasn't preparation. That was a down payment on betrayal.

Chapter Three: The Ex-Lover's Return
That night, Kira drove alone to the edge of the city, to a shotgun house in the West End that had been abandoned since the foreclosure crisis. She parked, killed the engine, and sat in the dark.
The knock on her window came at exactly midnight.
Zayn Ellis looked like a man who'd been carved from shadow and sin. Six-two, coffee-brown, with a scar across his left eyebrow and eyes that had seen too much and forgiven too little. He'd been her right hand, her lover, and her betrayer—all in the same year.
“You're late,” he said through the glass.
“You're alive,” she replied. “I heard you got clipped in Miami.”
“You heard wrong.” He opened her door, offered a hand. She didn't take it.
They walked into the empty house. Moonlight sliced through holes in the roof. Zayn lit a cigarette, offered one. She refused.
“Marcus is moving weight without you,” Zayn said. “Three shipments in the last month. All of them to a warehouse in Savannah. You know what's in Savannah?”
“Tell me.”
“Nothing. It's a dead drop. The product goes in, the money comes out, and you never see the buyer. That's not how Marcus works. He likes to look people in the eye.”
Kira's stomach turned. “Who's the buyer?”
Zayn exhaled smoke. “Your sister's new boyfriend. A Dominican named César Vargas. He's the one who tried to clip me in Miami. Guess who gave him my location?”
The answer hung in the air like a blade.
“Marcus,” Kira whispered.
“Marcus and Lena. They've been working together for six months. The Dubai trip isn't a partnership—it's a trap. They're going to introduce you to Rashid, then sell you out to the feds as the mastermind. Marcus walks. Lena gets your spot. And you get twenty-five years in federal prison.”
Kira's hands were shaking. Not from fear. From the effort of not killing someone.
“Why are you telling me this, Zayn? After what you did—stealing from me, disappearing—”
“Because I still love you.” He stepped closer. “Because I made a mistake, and I've spent two years trying to earn my way back. And because I have proof.”
He pulled a burner phone from his jacket, played a recording. Kira heard Marcus's voice, low and smooth:
“...Lena, you just keep her distracted in Dubai. I'll handle the paperwork. By the time she realizes what's happening, she'll be in an orange jumpsuit and we'll be on a beach in Cancún.”
Lena's laugh. “And what about Milan? She's loyal to Kira.”
Marcus: “Milan's loyal to money. I'll flip her before we land.”
The recording ended.
Kira stood in the dark, feeling her heart turn to stone.
“What do you need from me?” Zayn asked.
“Everything. Every name, every date, every wire transfer. And I need you to stay invisible.”
“Done.”
She walked to the door, then stopped. “Zayn?”
“Yeah?”
“If you're lying to me again, I will kill you myself. And this time, I won't miss.”
He smiled—that old, dangerous smile. “I know, Kitten. That's why I'm telling the truth.”

PART TWO: THE EXOTIC LURE
Chapter Four: Dubai
The Burj Al Arab rose from the Persian Gulf like a sail made of money and hubris. Kira stood on her private balcony, the wind pulling at her silk robe, and thought about how easy it would be to jump.
Not because she was sad. Because she was tired.
Milan came up behind her, wrapped her arms around Kira's waist. “You've been out here for an hour.”
“Thinking.”
“About?”
“How many ways this can go wrong.”
Milan turned her around, cupped her face. “We've survived worse. Remember Detroit?”
“Barely.”
“Remember that girl in New Orleans who tried to set us up?”
“She's at the bottom of the bayou.”
“Exactly.” Milan kissed her—soft, then hard. “We're the baddest bitches in any room. Don't forget that.”
Kira melted into the kiss, let herself feel something other than rage. Milan had been her secret for three years. Marcus didn't know. Lena didn't know. Nobody knew that the queen of Atlanta's empire was held together by a woman who could kill you with her thighs and comfort you with her voice.
“After Dubai,” Kira whispered, “we disappear. Just us. Some island where the only thing we move is beach chairs.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
A knock at the door shattered the moment.
Lena stood in the hallway, wearing a dress that cost more than a used car and a smile that cost nothing. “Rashid wants dinner. Tonight. His yacht.”
“We'll be ready,” Kira said.
“Oh, and Kira?” Lena leaned in. “Marcus wants you to wear the red dress. The one with the slit. He says Rashid likes legs.”
Kira smiled back, cold as winter. “Tell Marcus I'll wear whatever the fuck I want.”
