I was sitting alone, when I saw them through the restaurant window. A little old couple, walking together, holding hands. Smiling, they looked so happy. Probably married for 50 years and they still held hands like new sweethearts. It almost made me cry.
My husband and I had planned on being married for a hundred years. But he was gone too soon and we would not be growing old together. We would never be that gray-haired couple holding hands. Even if I remarried, I was almost 50 years old. The odds were against me ever being like that old couple.
For years, anytime I saw elderly people holding hands, publicly displaying their affection, I felt sad ... and envious. But, then one day, something in me changed. I looked at that hand-holding couple, walking by, differently. Maybe, just maybe, they were holding hands like new sweethearts because they were new sweethearts.
It's twenty years later now and I'm a gray-haired old lady. But if you hold my hand as we walk along the street, I will smile ... and feel new.

I am glad that you had that change of perspective. I feel pretty sure a goodly percent of grey haired couples that are holding hands have not been together for decades.
