I had a routine mammogram last week and got called back for follow-up, which happened today. The tech took additional mammogram pictures in different angles with more boob squashing than a normal mammogram. She showed them to the radiologist on duty, who then requested an ultrasound.
Off to a different room where the tech did an ultrasound exam and took several pictures, then left to have the radiologist review those. I relaxed on the bed in the darkened room. 
She came back after a while, and said that the radiologist wanted to look at it herself on the ultrasound.
Waited a few more minutes and Dr. Tang came in. Young, attractive, nice bedside manner. She took some more pictures, then I sat up and looked at them with her. It's a dark spot, very small - only 4 mm. She said it could be a benign cyst, but those usually have very defined edges and this spot is more blurry. So, since she couldn't be sure, I'm coming back in for a needle biopsy on Thursday.
I went through this same rigamarole back in 2009 and I have to say things have improved. As I recall, back then the follow-up mammogram didn't get interpreted immediately. I left and they called me later and then I had to make an additional separate appointment for the ultrasound. All of this was in the midst of a big project at work and I had to defer one of the appointments because I was out of town for a week for work. It was stressful. So I actually really appreciate that they have streamlined things since then and that I got to interact with the radiologist.
I just googled and 70% of needle biopsies are benign, so I'm not outrageously worried yet. Back in 2009 the needle biopsy showed that my suspicious area was a "benign fibranoma", whatever that is.

Being overly careful is saving lives. And it was nice they had a radiologisy in house. That makes the testing so much easier.

It is good you’re in capable hands and the advanced radiological equipment available today. Hopefully it comes back as benign and you breathe a sign of relief. Hate they’re gonna stick a needle in your pretty boobs though.

I'm grateful that there are such advanced diagnostics available...don't get me wrong...but it would be nice if this many resources got devoted to other health issues.

I’m sure most women have had a scare at one time or another. Breast screenings are the one area where women’s health care excels - we could speculate about why that is, haha.

I am glad the process has improved since your last experience, even though it’s still a lot to navigate. Having the radiologist involved right away must have helped.

Fibroadenomas are just little clumps of fibrous tissue...like a dust bunny of the breast. I'm glad things happened quickly and hopefully the end result is benign.

Thanks for the boob pic. Since I love a fine boob, but have no training nor expertise in boobology, I’ll defer to your medical people for their perspective. In the mean time I wish you well and hope you do fall in the statistics for good tumors.
