It was a Noisy, Wet and Restless Night

Isn’t that how good stories often start?But this one is a bit different from there on.

The night under discussion is last Thursday night. Plans to attend the outdoor concert got aborted when it was canceled due to the forecast of impending bad weather. Despite how things looked for much of the evening, in the end, just about 30 minutes before the concert would have been wrapping up there was a huge flash of lightning/crash of thunder and the rains began. The power stayed on through the internet went down.

Deprived of the ability to watch streaming as I do most every evening, I watched the local news and weather (which was chock full of rain and flood warnings) then headed to bed. About 130AM – BEEEEEPPP – the house alarm went off -“Sump warning”. I canceled the alarm and scurried down to the basement. It was just a little water had splashed on the sensor near the sump pump. NOT FUN, but no biggie. It had happened once before. Back to bed I went. It was hard to go back to sleep. Last I saw the clock it said 230.

Then at 300AM-BEEEEEPPP-”God Dammit!!”. I immediately thought it was the sump sensor again. NOPE this time it was my phone and a flood warning from the Weather Service. It specifically said ”Unless you’re escaping flooding water, DO NOT venture out.” YIKES, I didn’t recall them ever using such direct language before!

OK, back to bed and let’s try sleeping again. Hearing the thunder and rain made that a challenge. I guess I did finally doze off but woke up again about 630. Trying to go back to sleep was fruitless so about 730 I just got up.

Rain gauge said 5.23 inches. That should help with the on-going drought! They keep saying the triple digits are in store for this coming week. Might be nice to dry out just in time for the fireworks.

The word semiquincentennial comes from Latin roots: semi meaning half, quin for five, and centennial for 100th anniversary. So basically half of the 500th anniversary, or 250th.
