Well DAY-UM - That Was Disappointing!
In the mailbox at the end of my driveway the other day was a package from that S company. You know the one - the massive e-commerce fashion platform founded in China but now headquartered in Singapore. It's one of the world’s largest fashion retailers it seems. Problem was, I hadn't ordered anything from them. The ship to address was 100% correct (including a small refinement the Postal Service instituted a few years back), but the ship to name was a person totally unknown to me.
Rather than just dump the package back at the post office I took a picture of the address label, posted it in our neighborhood FB group, and asked in anyone knew this person. NOPE! Knowing that the e-commerce site is renowned for its sexy women’s clothing, I decided to open the package and see if perhaps it contained what could turn into a fun gift for S or such. Perchance some sexy lingerie? Or maybe a fun swimsuit? Perhaps a sexy dress? But no, the stuff in the package was BORING. So I resealed the package, taped a "NO SUCH PERSON AT THIS ADDRESS" note on it and dumped it off at the post office the next time I was over in that area.
Did I handle this properly? (YES, I realize that opening a package not addressed to me is probably illegal. But had the post office said anything I was prepared to state that I didn’t notice the name before I’d opened the package where the address was TOTALLY correct.)

I likely would have done exactly what you did. And depending on my mood, if it's something I didn't want, I'd have not bothered to send it back to the company. I'd donate it and recycle the box. The person who was supposed to get it will eventually contact the company and say it didn't arrive. Businesses have budgets for this sort of screw-up.
I once had to go 3 rounds with a company that didn't bother to verify the address with the online order details. They had sent out 3 of the items ordered...not anything fun for me, but something for my kid when she was younger...and I didn't receive any of them. And the person they were sending it to had my same first/last name but was back east. They got 3 identical items in 3 separate deliveries, never sent any of them back, and the company didn't bat an eyelash at having to send out a 4th item for me to finally get the one I ordered. Makes me wonder how much the markup was anyway!

I have opened all the envelopes received in the mail without looking at the front. Oops
I just assumed Mrs. C had ordered yet another thing. I didn't even look at the to or from address. She did, when she knew she wasn't expecting anything.
I can't recall ever getting someone else's package, but mine have been dropped on the next door neighbor's doorstep a few times. Probably because my house number is very difficult to read (the previous homeowner apparently thought it would be "classy" to have an address plate made that is black metal with bronze lettering).
Anyway, that's where the driver taking a photo of the delivery comes in handy!
This was regular post office mail. Best I know they're not high-tech like some of the others. But yes, the neighborhood FB page routinely has shots captioned "Does anyone recognize this front door?" 😀
Living in an apartment, getting mail for previous tenants is common. However, I've never received a misaddressed package - fun or otherwise. If I did, I'd return it, unopened. I do occasionally get mail addressed to my dead husband ... even after 20+ years. I throw those away unless, the same place keeps sending it. Those folks get a scathing letter.
I can understand being upset at the mail for long passed hubby. 🤗
I'd just return to sender.
I might have done that is the shipper was "Good Housekeeping" or some similarly boring place.
