Gym Mat Etiquette
I’m no Mr. Manners or anything, but I do try to consider others in everything I do. I’m 99.5% sure THIS would be frowned upon in most gyms. But I do have a question about a less clear cut situation.
The area in my gym where I do most of my stretching has two padded mats that are roughly 5 feet wide by 10 feet long. In my mind this is plenty of space for 4 people IF they lay across the mats, not along them. I always lay across them.
The other day the gym was busier than usual of course given it’s the start of a new year. As I was headed in the direction of the mats, two young women beat me to them. Each of them—maybe five feet tall and a hundred pounds soaking wet—managed to sprawl across an entire mat. Two tiny humans taking up maximum real estate, leaving absolutely none for me.😡 I thought about politely saying something, but instead stalled around doing some other things. They weren’t there all that long and I moved in as soon as they departed. Of course, I positioned myself across the mat so others would have space.
Not too long after I began my stretching a 30-some lady said to me “I’m sorry, I don’t know the etiquette. Is it OK if I use this spot next to you?” I replied “ABSOLUTELY! That is exactly why I am positioned across the mat.”
Facing a 5x10 mat, which way would you position yourself?
Would it have been too vastly rude of me to very politely say something to the young ladies that were hogging the mats?
If you think it would not have been improper for me to say something, what verbiage would you have used?

Athlete a person who is proficient in forms of physical exercise!
Don't see enough of that kind of training at my gym.

I was at their behavior if that is what you mean, but I'm guessing it is not.
🤷♀️ It seems like an awkward setup. I can see why the ladies positioned themselves that way because to me it would feel weird to have the “crack” hitting me in the middle of if I were stretching out full length. At my gym they have thinner mats (like thick yoga mats) hanging on the wall- you grab one, use it and then hang it back up.
These mats are plenty thick. I really believe they just didn't think about the fact that the place was especially busy and they were hogging the whole dang area.
I'm having trouble picturing the mat configuration but there's no way you could have said anything without being the bad guy. Where's a karen when you need one!
That's what I decided too. When in doubt, say nothing.

I've never been to the gym to know what the etiquette is. But the two women hogging the mat weren't that considerate.
It surely seemed that way to me, though more likely they were simply oblivious to the impact of their actions.
@CleavageFan4U true. Many people are so self absorbed they are completely unaware…. Like most drivers in Minnesota! 🤣. Next time, I’d say something. It’s also an opportunity to flirt! If they don’t like you asking politely, nothing lost. If they had needed to space they could also state their intentions.
@Toomanymuffs It's a particularly dicey situation given their young hotness and me being an old man. The only and only time I've had a confrontation there it was when I totally innocently starting using a machine that apparently these three young hotties were rotating amongst their group. The one had no compunctions about telling me "WE were using that!"

Haaa, well I did do that (discreetly) but it still impressed me as being a rather self-absorbed act on their part.
