Recalling a Favorite Prank

I’m currently watching Season 2 of White Lotus. (Yeah, I know, I’m behind.) That season is set at a posh resort in Italy. One story line features a man, his son, and his father, who are there to explore their Italian heritage. All three men have separate rooms.

Even before arriving the man contacts a local working girl and arranges for her to visit him in his room each evening. She soon convinces him to add her girlfriend to their group.

The problem is, the resort manager is very protective the resort’s reputation and repeatedly denies the girls access to the hotel. To address that challenge the man adds them as guests to his room. That action gets them room keys that not only provide them access but allow them to charge purchases to the room. They do so with abandon. 😂 That story line reminded me of a somewhat similar experience I had years ago.

A bunch of coworkers and I were in Brazil for 3 weeks along with customers and the FAA working on development of a maintenance program for a new airliner. All of us had been there for shorter periods previously so the hotel staff knew us. It was the custom at this hotel to just change all restaurant and bar charges to your room and settle up at checkout. Someone, I don’t even recall who, floated the idea that it would be hilarious to charge everything to this one guy’s room and then be there to see his reaction when it was finally time to checkout. We went ahead as planned and were sure to get up early and be down in the lobby so at not to miss the scene when the “victim” was checking out.

When he saw the number on his bill he started stammering and damn near had a heart attack. We didn’t let it go on too long before we intervened. We just had the hotel divide the end number evenly over all our accounts since it was ultimately all being expensed to the same place.
